Wordsmith Writing Essentials

Writing can be tough and a lot of students find they struggle when writing expectations increase in middle and high school. This course is designed to guide middle and high school students through the essential skills of effective writing, starting with the basics and building toward a polished five-paragraph essay.  Students will begin by mastering sentence construction, including grammar, punctuation, and sentence variety. From there, they will learn how to develop clear and focused paragraphs with strong topic sentences, supporting details, and smooth transitions.

As the course progresses, students will apply these skills to plan, draft, and revise structured essays.  Emphasis will be placed on crafting strong thesis statements, organizing ideas logically, and writing compelling introductions and conclusions. Along the way, students will practice editing and peer review, gaining confidence in their ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively.

By the end of the course, students will have developed the tools to write with clarity, coherence, and purpose—skills that will support academic success across all subject areas.
