US Government & Civics

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the foundations, structure, and function of the United States government. Students will examine the historical and philosophical roots of American democracy, including key ideas from Enlightenment thinkers, foundational documents such as the Declaration of Independence, Federalist Papers, and the U.S. Constitution, and the debates that shaped the American political system. We will trace the evolution of the U.S. government over time, highlighting key constitutional changes, landmark Supreme Court cases, and major political developments. Students will analyze how federalism divides power among national, state, and local governments and explore how each level of government impacts citizens' daily lives.  

Students will engage with topics such as the separation of powers, checks and balances, civil liberties and rights, political participation, and the responsibilities of citizenship. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to become informed, active participants in their nation.

Students who complete all assignments and most extra credit with a high degree of accuracy can take this for Honors credit.
